The pandemic has changed the way many of us workout since gym memberships have been on pause. Fortunately for seniors, there are many alternative options to stay active right from their own home! Below, we’re sharing some simple at-home exercises for seniors.
Stretch It Out
Stretching is an important piece of your workout, whether you do so before or after – or both! A good stretch warms up your muscles, makes them more limber, and prepares them for the impact of your workout. Want a good all-stretch workout? Try yoga! Lifting Light Weights
If one of your goals is to tone up your arm muscles, you can do it with a pair of 2 or 3-pound dumbbells (or anything you have around your home that is of a similar weight). When you combine light weights with high repetitions, you’re in for a solid workout!
Cardio and Aerobics
While walking, jogging, and running are all certainly forms of cardio, they’re not the only ways you can get your heart rate up! You can have fun aerobics and try new exercises like dancing or jumping rope too. Cardio and aerobics help get your blood circulating and let you work on your stamina and endurance!
Calisthenics and Props
You often won’t need any equipment if you’re doing bodyweight exercises (also known as calisthenics). But bodyweight workouts can be a big challenge! If you need some extra support or want assistance for safety, use a prop instead for exercises like squats or push-ups. For more support with squats, use a chair. Stand in front of the chair, bend your knees, and lower yourself onto it. Then stand back up. Repeat the motion. For assistance with push-ups, use a clear section of a wall. Stand a few feet away and place your hands flat on the wall. Lower yourself towards the wall, and then push away from it again to complete the movement.
